Wholesale Soap Pricing: Landed Cost, Retail Markup, and Margin

The wholesale bar price is only the first line in your cost. A useful retail price also accounts for labels, packaging, shipping, receiving, storage, assembly, selling fees, damaged units, promotions, and the margin your channel needs.

The direct answer

How should a retailer price wholesale soap?

Start with landed cost per sellable bar, not the supplier price alone. Then calculate both markup and gross margin. Markup measures profit relative to cost. Gross margin measures gross profit as a percentage of the selling price. A price that looks like a large markup can still leave too little margin after marketplace fees, discounts, damaged inventory, and customer acquisition.

Clear volume pricing

Lower entry pricing. Better rates as volume grows.

Build a mixed assortment across eligible WTS bars. Different scents and formulas combine toward the same volume tier.

On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to see every column.

QuantityPrice per barSavings from $4.80
1 to 49 bars $4.80 Base price
50 to 99 bars $4.55 5.2%
250 to 499 bars $3.95 17.7%
500 to 999 bars $3.70 22.9%
1,000 to 1,999 bars $3.45 28.1%
2,000+ bars $3.25 32.3%

Prices are per bar. Shipping is calculated separately. Product availability and lead times vary by order size.

Build the real unit cost

Calculate landed cost before choosing the shelf price.

01

Product

Use the applicable volume-tier price for the total eligible quantity in the order.

02

Presentation

Add labels, wraps, boxes, inserts, printing, design allocation, and final assembly.

03

Movement and handling

Add inbound shipping, receiving, storage, picking, kitting, and outbound fulfillment where applicable.

04

Selling cost

Add card fees, marketplace fees, retailer margin, samples, promotions, returns, damage, and acquisition cost.

Two formulas, different answers

Do not confuse markup with gross margin.

Markup percentage = (Retail price minus landed cost) divided by landed cost.

Gross margin percentage = (Retail price minus landed cost) divided by retail price.

If a bar has a $6.00 landed cost and sells for $12.00, the markup is 100%, while the gross margin is 50% before later operating expenses.

Example landed cost

  • Wholesale bar: $4.80
  • Packaging and label: $0.55
  • Allocated inbound shipping: $0.35
  • Assembly and handling: $0.30
  • Total landed cost: $6.00

Replace every example input with your actual cost.

Price for the channel

One product may need several economic models.

Direct retail

Your price must absorb payment, fulfillment, customer service, promotions, returns, and acquisition.

Marketplace retail

Add listing, transaction, advertising, payment, and shipping-policy costs before evaluating the margin.

Wholesale to another retailer

Your brand needs a sell-in price that covers your cost while leaving enough retail margin for the store.

Use volume intentionally

A lower bar price helps only when the inventory sells.

Moving to a larger volume tier reduces unit cost, but it also increases cash tied up in inventory, storage needs, packaging labor, and the number of units that must sell before reorder. Use sample feedback and real sell-through to decide when a larger tier improves the business.

Wholesale soap pricing FAQ

Questions before setting the retail price.

What is the WTS wholesale soap price?

The public schedule currently begins at $4.80 per bar for 1 to 49 eligible bars and decreases across larger combined quantities to $3.25 per bar at 2,000 or more. Confirm current product eligibility and order details before relying on a tier.

Can different bars combine toward the same price tier?

Yes. Eligible WTS stock bars currently combine toward the same public volume tier. Confirm current availability and private-label eligibility for the exact mix.

What retail markup should a soap store use?

There is no universal percentage. Calculate landed cost, channel fees, desired gross margin, customer price tolerance, competitor context, and the expected discount rate.

Should a new brand buy the largest tier?

Not automatically. A lower unit price does not help if the brand overbuys slow formulas. Start with samples and a focused assortment, then use sales data to earn the next tier.

Build the cost with the actual assortment

Choose formulas, quantity, packaging, and shipping together.
