What’s inside

A true tallow soap, made liquid with potassium hydroxide

Every format is the same soap. The paste is the concentrate. The bottles and pails are that paste diluted with water, one part paste to two parts water by weight.

  • Pasture-raised, grass-fed, grass-finished suet tallow: from small family farms, the main oil in the soap.
  • Castor and jojoba oils: castor oil builds a fuller lather, and a little jojoba oil softens the feel.
  • Potassium hydroxide: the lye that turns the oils into a liquid soap. Bar soap uses sodium hydroxide instead.
  • Glycerin, sugar, and water: vegetable glycerin, a little sugar for lather, and water to make it pourable.

Bottle, pail, or paste

Same soap, three ways to buy it

The more of the work you do, the less each bottle costs.

  • 16 oz bottle

Ready to sell. Amber glass with a pump. Add your label and shelve it. $15 down to $11 a bottle.

  • 3.5 gallon pail

Ready to pour. The same finished soap, about 3.1 gallons. Fill your own bottles or run a refill station. About $5.60 to $4.47 of soap per 16 oz bottle.

  • Paste

Mix it yourself. The concentrate, before the water goes in. Lightest to ship, lowest cost per bottle, and you set the thickness and scent. About $3.27 to $2.43 of soap per 16 oz bottle.

Using the paste

One part paste, two parts water

Weigh both. 1 lb of paste and 2 lb of distilled water make 3 lb of liquid soap, enough for three 16 oz bottles.

  1. Step 1

    Weigh it out

Weigh the paste, then twice that weight in distilled water.

  2. Step 2

    Warm half the water

Heat about half the water to 160°F, steaming but not boiling, and stir in the paste in chunks.

  3. Step 3

    Cover and wait

Turn off the heat, cover, and let it melt for a few hours. Rewarm gently if chunks remain.

  4. Step 4

    Finish and bottle

Stir in the rest of the water slowly, let it cool, and bottle once the foam settles.

You need a kitchen scale, a lidded stainless pot, distilled water, and a spoon. One bottle: 5.3 oz of paste and 10.7 oz of water. Stir gently, since whisking only adds foam. If a thin white film rises as it cools, skim it off.

Make it yours

Scent, thickness, and your label

  • Scent

Add essential oils once it cools. 1% of the soap’s weight is light and 2% is strong: about 1 to 2 teaspoons per 16 oz bottle, or 4.3 to 8.5 oz per pail.

  • Thickness

You choose the water. Two parts water is our standard. Use one and a half parts for a thicker soap. For foaming pumps, start with one part finished soap to two parts water.

  • Your label

Everything ships unlabeled. Put your brand on the bottles or pails. Send us your labels and we can apply them for $0.75 each; the labels themselves are separate.

Check each oil before you sell. Confirm its IFRA limit and your supplier’s safety data. Added oils can thicken the soap and soften the lather a little, so test a small batch first.

FAQ

Tallow liquid soap questions

Still have a question? Call 612-208-6516 or email hello@wholesaletallowsoapusa.com.

Is this castile soap?

Castile soap traditionally means soap made from olive oil. This one is made the same way, from oils and potassium hydroxide, but its main oil is grass-fed tallow. It contains no synthetic detergents.

Does it contain a preservative?

No. It is a true soap with no preservative added. Keep containers closed. If you add your own ingredients after diluting, such as honey or aloe, plan your own preservation and testing.

What goes on my ingredient label?

We list the starting ingredients above. Labels that use INCI names for the finished soap often read: Water (Aqua), Potassium Tallowate, Glycerin, Potassium Castorate, Potassium Jojobate, Sucrose. Check the rules that apply to your product before you print.

How full are the bottles and pails?

Each bottle holds 16 oz of soap by weight, about 15.6 fl oz. Each pail holds about 26.6 lb of soap, about 3.1 gallons, with room at the top so the screw lid seals.

Can I add my own scent?

Yes. Stir in essential oils or fragrance after the soap has cooled. See Make it yours for starting rates per bottle and per pail.

How does it ship?

Checkout adds shipping from your ZIP code and order weight. Paste ships double-bagged, bottles ship packed in boxes, and each pail ships in its own box at about 33 lb.
