Tallow soap ingredients: how to read the complete formula
Every tallow soap starts with fats, including tallow, and an alkali. The rest varies by bar, so read each product’s full list.

Tallow soap is made by saponifying tallow, a rendered animal fat, with an alkali, often alongside other fats and oils. A finished bar may also contain water or milk, scent materials, colorants, and featured ingredients such as honey, clay, charcoal, or coffee.
So the category name doesn’t tell you the full formula. Read the product-specific ingredient list before you compare bars or write retail copy.
The six jobs ingredients do in a bar

| Base fats and oils | Tallow and supporting oils set the balance of hardness, cleansing, and lather. Every oil changes that balance. |
| Alkali and liquid | The alkali, sodium hydroxide (lye) in bar soap, reacts with the fats and oils to make soap. Water, or a liquid such as milk, is part of the mix. |
| Scent materials | Essential oils or a fragrance set the scent direction. An unscented formula leaves them out. |
| Featured ingredients | Milk, honey, coffee, charcoal, clay, or botanicals can change lather, texture, color, aroma, or the bar’s story. |
| Color and appearance | Micas, clays, and plant powders help shoppers tell bars apart. Natural variation can make each batch look slightly different. |
| Packaging copy | Accurate copy names the real ingredients and avoids health promises the soap wasn’t built to prove. |

Every full ingredient list we publish shares one base: grass-fed tallow, olive oil, coconut oil, and sodium hydroxide, plus sodium lactate. Most also list water, avocado oil, and shea butter. Here is what sets each bar apart:

Does tallow soap still contain lye?
Lye is used to make it. A correctly formulated, fully completed process is designed so the reaction produces finished soap. Ask the maker about its process and release standard; ours is in our Production and Curing Policy.
Are all tallow soaps unscented?
No. Tallow soap can be unscented or made in many scent directions, because “tallow” names an ingredient, not a fragrance. See does tallow soap smell?
Can tallow soap include goat milk or olive oil?

Does tallow soap contain palm oil?
It doesn’t have to. Tallow gives a bar the hardness that many other soaps get from palm oil. We don’t use palm in any product we make, so every bar in our line is palm-free. See our tallow standard.
Can a retailer claim an ingredient treats a skin condition?
